Shungite

A gathered group of shungite: sooty black and silver-bright carbon pieces, polished spheres and raw chunks against near-black.

Almost pure carbon, from one place in Karelia. Sooty, strange and very old.

The aesthetic

Shungite is a carbon-rich rock found in commercial quantity in only one region, Karelia in north-west Russia, and dating back roughly two billion years. Elite or noble shungite is over ninety-eight percent carbon, silver-bright and brittle; the common black material is softer, will mark the hands like charcoal, and is the type usually polished into spheres and pyramids.

The dynamic

Shungite is associated with protection and grounding, and is the stone most often kept near a desk or a device on account of that reputation.
